2011 global major lithium battery manufacturers shipping situation

According to market research firm Shui Qing Muhua, global lithium battery shipments in 2010 were approximately 3.902 billion units, an increase of 27.4% from 2010 shipments. Global lithium battery shipments are expected to reach approximately 4.448 billion units in 2011, an increase of 14% from 2010.

Lithium battery industry originated in Japan, after 2007, China, Japan and South Korea formed a three-point situation. Japanese companies still have an absolute advantage. In 2010, Panasonic restructured the battery business of Sanyo Electric and eventually merged with Panasonic's battery business into Panasonic Energy Devices. In fiscal 2011, Matsushita’s energy devices earned 760 billion yen, or approximately US$8.66 billion. The operating profit margin of this department is 1.6%. Its lithium-ion battery revenue is 298 billion yen, ranking first in the world.

After several years of rapid growth, China's lithium battery companies have begun to show signs of fatigue. Leading company BYD's revenue and sales have both fallen. The automobile and mobile phone industries have occupied more resources of BYD. The increase in power of God and Bick is significantly lower than before 2010. Because of the lower rate of return on capital, lithium battery companies cannot attract more funds and talents. Coupled with the long-term implementation of monetary tightening policies, the competitiveness of enterprises has dropped significantly.

Korean companies continue to make great strides, especially Samsung SDI, which dominates the mobile phone industry. With regard to shipments alone, Samsung SDI has been the absolute number one, continuing its rapid growth in 2011 and expecting shipments to increase by 34%. LG Chemical's development trend is not bad. On the one hand, LG Chemicals breaks the encirclement of Japanese companies and enters the HP laptop battery supply chain; on the other hand, LG Chemicals is recognized by GM, FORD, BMW, BENZ and VOLVO in the field of automotive lithium batteries. .

The lithium battery market is still dominated by mobile phones and notebook computers. The development of lithium battery cells in the automotive industry is slow, and the cost-effectiveness of electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid vehicles (PHEVs and HEVs) is low, mainly relying on government subsidies. While European and American economies are trying to reduce their fiscal expenditures, government subsidy policies may be cancelled or reduced. In the next 3-5 years, the prices of electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles cannot be reduced, and the market remains sluggish.
