Demystifying the truth about Nokia phones

A report by The Verge that Nokia is developing Android phones to replace its low-end Asha series has caused heated discussions across the network and contention from major media. Nokia's approach is not a betrayal of Microsoft or a flattery of Google. Nokia is just using this free and open source Android platform that has the largest share of the global mobile phone market.

Google ’s Android is what most Americans know, but it ’s not really open. It's free, but Google strictly controls the Google App Store, Maps, Gmail, Chrome, Music Video Player, and other important applications.

If you are not willing to use all of the above, the Android open source platform is basically free, anyone can use it to develop a mobile phone of their dreams. It is mainly provided by Google, but anyone can download and use it to realize their various ideas.

In the United States, Amazon ’s Fire system is a prime example of the Android open source platform. The Android open source platform is a much bigger cake in China, although the government does not support the use of Google services. According to Gartner, 41% of Android devices sold in China are not Google ’s Android at all, but Android ’s open source platform phones will link to a series of different application stores through built-in different applications.

Android is not a platform. It has become a platform platform, on this platform, there are Google's Android, Amazon's Android, Baidu's Android and other big waves of other versions of Android. I guess this will make Android's core Linux a platform platform platform.

The end of S40

Nokia's Asha phones are all based on the S40 system, which is a very old system that has been in use since 1999. The S40 does not take up memory, and the poor processor and low memory can run smoothly. However, it is not suitable for the development trend of this industry. Although S40 is well-known, Nokia has struggled to obtain a third party to develop applications for S40.

Nokia does need to abandon its S40, but its new owner, Microsoft, does not have a good alternative to the S40. Windows Phone 8 is still not suitable to run on Asha-level phones. Because this platform generally requires 512M of running memory and Qualcomm processors, but Asha phones only have 32M of running memory. Microsoft can try to develop a lower version of Windows Phone, but using the Android open source platform is a cheaper and faster method. Running memory and processors are getting cheaper, but at the same time, Nokia needs a transitional operating system.

Nokia ’s Android open source platform can use Nokia ’s or Microsoft ’s services and icons without using Google ’s graphic design. They have Bing search, Here map ... And, I think Nokia's chart should look like Nokia's classic square instead of Android's square. Maybe Android apps from other third parties are also compatible, maybe not. However, what is certain is that Nokia will ask developers to develop applications for their stores.

By using the Android open source platform, Nokia can continue to produce the $ 69 best-selling mobile phone used to send messages and surf the Internet, without having to worry about updating the old platform of S40, or worrying about being tied too tight by Google. This seems like a smart move, but do n’t expect these phones from Nokia to look like the Android phones you know.
