With the MEP’s drastic rectification of lead-acid batteries, a “battery shortage” storm swept through, and the battery gap for some electric vehicle manufacturers was as high as 80%.

Earlier this month, the Ministry of Environmental Protection announced the list of lead-acid battery companies in the country and the results of their remediation. Of the 1,930 lead-acid battery companies in the country, 82% were shut down. There are 191 lead-acid storage battery enterprises in Guangdong, the number of which ranks third in the country. In the current rectification, 84% of the enterprises were shut down, higher than the national level.

Affected by the "battery shortage," electric vehicle companies are undergoing a major reshuffle, which can be said to be two-fold. Some companies have already announced the suspension of production or bankruptcy because they can't get their batteries. Other companies, with their abundant supply of batteries, emerged in the crisis.

Causes

The Ministry of Environmental Protection's strict regulation of lead-acid batteries for the lead-acid battery industry has been the top priority for the 2011 national environmental protection campaign since the beginning of the year. On May 18, the Ministry of Environmental Protection issued a notice again requesting the establishment of a lifelong accountability system for heavy metal pollution liability.

From February to the end of May this year, environmental protection and other related departments of Guangdong Province have carried out special investigations on lead battery enterprises. Of the 191 list of lead storage battery companies announced by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Environmental Protection, 134 are in the state of suspend production, rectification, or natural production cuts, and another 27 companies have banned or relocated their production, and the rate of shutting down has reached 84%.

This is just the beginning. A reporter from the Southern Rural Daily learned from the China Battery Industry Association that the country will also carry out the second and third rounds of lead battery rectification.

"The supervision of lead storage batteries will become more and more stringent, and the first round of rectification of lead batteries will be completed at the end of July. Such rectification actions will continue and will not be relaxed at all."

The China Battery Industry Association’s spokesperson Yu Qingxuan told reporters that “the state plans to retain only 200 to 300 lead battery companies during the 12th Five-Year Plan period. When manufacturers increase prices, we resist pressure and do not raise prices. In order to be able to sell more electric vehicles, we would prefer less of them. Regarding the situation of Guangdong electric car companies, Ma Zhesen, secretary-general of the Guangdong Bicycle Electric Vehicle Industry Association, said, “The sales of electric vehicle companies in Guangdong this year have risen on the whole, but some companies have been unable to get the battery because of the rectification of lead batteries.
