Powering USB devices in the car with the LT8697

More and more cars are beginning to be equipped with USB sockets. The USB interface delivers power to the portable device via a 5V VBUS and ground line. Depending on the USB version and the portable device, VBUS can supply up to 2.1A. In a car, this high VBUS current presents a problem. Typically, automotive electronics (including VBUS regulators) are placed in a box inside the dashboard, and some USB sockets may be placed behind the car. In the block, the wiring length between the VBUS regulator and the socket can reach several meters. If the loop is counted, this length will be doubled. The long cable means high resistance, so the 5V VBUS power supply under high USB device current conditions. The voltage will drop dramatically.

The LT8697 solves this problem by providing a compact, high efficiency, high speed, synchronous, monolithic, step-down switching regulator designed to power 5V USB applications. A precise (initial tolerance <1%) output voltage and programmable cable drop compensation maintains accurate 5V regulation on a USB socket located at the end of a long cable. Accurate and programmable output current limits, a power good indicator pin, and an output current monitor pin improve system reliability and safety and eliminate the need for a USB switch. These features allow the user to perform a lockout or autoretry feature. Despite the cable drop compensation function, the dual input feedback limits the output voltage to 5.85V, which protects the USB device and allows 5V regulation at the output of a USB switch.
