Qualcomm and AT&T will conduct drone testing in a cellular network environment to accelerate their large-scale deployment

On September 6, 2016, Qualcomm Incorporated announced that its subsidiary Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. (QTI) will partner with AT&T to perform UAS testing on 4G LTE commercial networks.

The test will analyze how the UAV system operates safely and steadily on 4G LTE commercial networks and future networks including 5G. The study will explore the factors that influence the future operation of drones.

The test team will explore the coverage, signal, strength and mobility of the cross-network cells and how they provide functional support for the flight of the drone. As regulatory norms evolved until they were licensed, the purpose of these trials and ongoing research was to support the operation of future drones, such as over-the-horizon (BVLOS) flights. The ability of the drone to fly outside the operator's line of sight can support its delivery, remote monitoring and exploration. Wireless technology offers many advantages for drones, including full coverage, high-speed mobile support, robust security, high reliability, and quality of service (QoS).

Matt Grob, executive vice president and chief technology officer of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., said: "With AT&T's influence and technology to conduct joint carrier trials, it is important to develop connectivity technologies for small unmanned aerial systems (SUAS). Connectivity technologies include LTE network optimization and 5G technology evolution for drones. We are not only analyzing the high scalability of LTE network optimization, but also supporting safe and legal commercial small UAV system use cases through over-the-horizon connections; As our test results involve large-scale deployment of a large number of drone use cases, this will also help to actively promote the development of drone regulations and 5G specifications."

Chris Penrose, senior vice president of AT&T IoT Solutions, said: "A number of predictable drone advantages, including delivery, monitoring and search and rescue, require highly secure and reliable connectivity. Based on regulatory and business needs, LTE connectivity has the potential to provide optimal flight planning, communicate flight permits, track drone locations, and adjust flight routes in near real-time. Addressing connectivity challenges in complex flight operations is a critical first step in supporting future operations of drones. ”

The UAS trial described above will be based on the Qualcomm® Snapdragon FlightTM drone development platform, which is designed to provide superior control and navigation performance. The platform is currently available in select commercial drones and is available in high-fidelity sensor processing, precision positioning, automatic visual navigation and 4K video capture in lightweight models for consumers and businesses.

The trial will begin in the Qualcomm Technologies San Diego campus later this month. Testing will be conducted in the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) authorized UAS flight center and test environment. The center has a variety of “realistic” environments, including commercial, residential, uninhabited, and FAA-controlled airspace. The facility supports drone testing based on commercial cellular networks without affecting AT&T's daily network operations.

Participants at the 2016 CTIA Super Mobility 2016 can watch video demonstrations at the Qualcomm booth at the 5G Pavilion. At 9 am Pacific time on September 8th (Thursday), Matt Grob will showcase the advantages of LTE-based drones in his keynote speech.
