Microsemi Corporation announced a partnership with Sony's Semiconductor Business Unit ("Sony") to introduce the market's first 3D-enabled timing controller and local dimming LED backlight combination solution for lower manufacturing costs A large number of next-generation LCD TVs. This complete turnkey reference design combines Sony's powerful video and lighting processing technology with Microsemi DAZL! LED drive technology to produce outstanding high-quality 3D and 2D images using LCD panels from multiple manufacturers. This technology integration enables a low-cost 60 Hz refresh rate LCD panel to achieve image quality comparable to the more expensive 120 Hz LCD panel and allows the image quality of a 120 Hz LCD panel to catch up with the costly advanced 240 Hz LCD panel. TV designers can now use this solution to create 3D LCD TVs with higher image quality and contrast while reducing cost, simplifying design and speeding time to market.
