Twenty questions to help you understand MediaTek's 2017 strategy

[IT168 News] The rapid growth of domestic mobile phones has also further promoted the upstream and downstream industry upgrades, the most obvious of which is the chip makers. According to third-party data, Mediatek has performed well in Greater China this year. In addition to excellent mobile phone chips, it has also launched offensives in areas such as smart life, Internet of Things and car networking, and strives to achieve a diversified layout. . In terms of the domestic market, MediaTek currently enjoys a market share of more than 40% and a year-on-year increase of 29%, and is expected to further increase its gross margin performance next year. There are many signs that MediaTek will continue in recent years. Strengthen the domestic market.

In fact, the mobile phone market in China has entered a big change in 2016. The current situation of saturation of the overall market has slowed down the growth of major mobile phone brands. On the other hand, it has also given rise to the trend of consumer upgrades. Therefore, it is necessary for the mobile phone manufacturers to talk about the trend of understanding the upstream industry as soon as possible. After all, the future product dynamics of MediaTek may directly affect the layout of the market. The correspondent of this site also made an exclusive interview with the two executive deputy general managers and co-operation chiefs Zhu Shangzu and Chen Guanzhou at the first time, hoping to understand MediaTek's more market dynamics in the coming year.

(For ease of reading and understanding, the content of this article adopts a key question and answer system. The texts are slightly edited and organized. For more details about the interview, please contact the staff of the site.)

Q: How does MediaTek look at the Chinese mobile phone market next year?

A: At present, there are already signs of saturation in the domestic market. The total number of smart phones should not grow too much, so the whole should not change much. (Note: In 2015 and 2016, the domestic smart machine market was 470 million units.)

Q: Since the domestic market is saturated, what are the plans and plans for MediaTek?

A: At present, MediaTek has a 40-50% market share in mainland China, but as domestic manufacturers go to sea, MediaTek will also make efforts in the Southeast Asian market. At present, MediaTek has also achieved a market share of 30%-40% in India's 4G market, and this year it has also successfully entered the US market. Through the US Sprint and Verizon network certification, although the current share is still less than 10%, but follow-up This part will grow. The market share of mobile phone chips in the future is still the focus of MediaTek's development.

In addition, the average growth rate of the top 20 semiconductor companies is around 3%. In addition to the ranking, MediaTek is currently up to 29% of revenue growth, ranking second. We still have confidence in the future market. (Note: MediaTek ranked 11th among the top 20 semiconductor companies in 2016 and 13th in 2015.)

Q: What is MediaTek's gross profit margin forecast for this year and next year?

A: Although our revenue is growing, it is undeniable that our gross profit margin is still declining in the first half of 2016, and we have achieved a flat rate in the second half of the year. We hope that the market share of mobile phones will be further improved next year. In addition, we will release new products in the second half of next year and we should be able to achieve profitability of gross margins.

Q: If you look at the volume of orders, what is the biggest partner mobile phone manufacturer in China?

A: Actually, this aspect is similar. The order quantities of our top few cooperating customers are very close to each other. However, the top five customer lists should include OPPO, Meizu, Xiaomi, LeTV and Jinli.

Q: LeTV currently has a tight supply chain for funding. Is the current smooth cooperation with you and will it affect the follow-up cooperation?

A: With regard to the tight supply chain of LeTV, we believe that Lexus will have a proper solution to this business operation. At present, LeTV and our cooperation are smooth and there is no arrears. But frankly, LeTV's incident will really allow us to pay more attention to the cooperation with mobile phone manufacturers. The impact on this aspect is slightly more.

Q: Meizu used MediaTek products almost all the way this year, so did you have any special commercial offers for them? It is also reported that Meizu may be connected to Samsung and Qualcomm next year. What do you think?

Meizu has always been our important customer. Each company has its own strategy for customer operations. In this regard, chip companies should have similar situations. In addition Meizu and Samsung's relationship has always been good, and is almost Samsung's only partner in the country, so we understand their ideas. As for the cooperation between Meizu and Qualcomm, we have yet to feel that they have signs of cooperation with Qualcomm.

Q: Can the Helio X30's progress be formally announced? Currently the same 10nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chip will be in mass production in 2017Q1, and the shipment time may even be faster, so is there concern that Helio is once again defined at around RMB1,000?

A: At present, the 10nm research and development of MediaTek and TSMC is in progress, even more smoothly than we thought. Therefore, some customers actually have samples of the Helio X30. According to the current progress, we will see the availability of high-end products in the second quarter. Of course, if the customer wants to publish in advance, or if the price is defined as thousand yuan (parity), we do not interfere with the terminal manufacturers' pricing and market strategies.

Q: MediaTek encountered a tight supply of chips this year. Internal assessment of the incident is the reason? Does TSMC's 10nm supply to the next generation of iPhones, will it affect the productivity of the Helio X30?

A: We did experience a lack of chip capacity this year. The main reason was that we made mistakes in our evaluation of the smartphone market in 2016. In 2015, we planned the number of orders for the next year. From the perspective of the time, we could see the growth of the domestic smart phone market (should be a decline), which led to some tactical mistakes. After this lesson, we will be more cautious afterwards. At present, the Helio X30 chip has a very clear order (it is not directly placed before the order), and the production capacity should be able to meet as much as possible.

Q: At present, MediaTek's mobile phone chips are most popularly divided into Helio X and P series. Are other models (such as MT67xx series) planning to make new series? What is the relative sales volume?

A: Frankly speaking, there is such a plan, but the Helio X series and P series have only been in operation for several years and they need to be continued. In fact, the sales volume of each model is almost the same as that of your friends. Basically, it is a pyramid structure. The high-end is at the top (sales less), and the low-end popular type is naturally the most sold.

Q: At the time of planning the chip route in the past, it was originally only X20/P10, but it seems that the Helio X25 and P15 were introduced without warning, so it will be the same afterwards. For example, the Helio X35 is launched?

A: Mainly to adjust to the market, we found that better performance can be obtained after the internal process is improved. This is a commercial win-win for us or terminal manufacturers. (Editor's note: So if the Helio X30 also has room for internal improvement, including clock speed, graphics/memory frequency, etc., that person understands that Helio X35 chips should also be introduced.)

Q: Will there be new architectural changes or breakthroughs in the future high-end chips, including self-developed GPUs and basebands?

A: We should continue to implement multi-cluster architecture in high-end chips. Our previous Helio X20 uses CorePilot 3.0 heterogeneous computing, and Helio X30 should be defined as CorePilot 4.0. The general idea has not changed. As for the graphics chip, we currently have two suppliers of ARM's Mali series and Imagination Power VR series, which will be based on their products, with no intention of self-development. As for the ISP, communication technology will continue to reform, including 4CA (four-carrier aggregation) and so on.

Q: With the continuous improvement of the manufacturing process, the future 16nm will even be called the standard configuration. Does MediaTek have any plans for this?

A: We will use advanced processes on high-end products, but we will continue to use the 28nm process for popular products, and we will not quickly eliminate them in a short period of time.

Q: The trend of the domestic mobile phone market this year is fingerprint recognition, double shots. What breakthroughs will there be in MediaTek next year?

A: At present, basic fingerprint identification has been fully covered, and dual-lens currently only provides features such as zooming and blurring, and it is only applied to high-end models. Next year, it should fully popularize dual-lens, including models within a thousand dollars (metropolis). There are supporting solutions). In addition, taking a picture of the night view is still the direction that can be continuously improved. At present, this is still not good enough.

Q: How does MediaTek see the VR market? Will it make a strong transition to do VR business?

We think that VR is a very good market, but there are still many problems that need to be solved. Mediatek has a team in the field of VR, but power consumption has always been a big problem. In the current battery technology has not yet a revolutionary breakthrough, I believe that each program is similar. If VR can be made in the same way as mobile devices in the future, there may be a real change.

Q: What are the main customer groups for car networking solutions?

A: In the emerging field, we will not lock up the top-level customers from the beginning. Currently, we mainly target the mid-level mainstream automotive market. In terms of channels, we mainly develop cooperation with customers.

Q: How many employees are currently in the IoT sector? What is the basic situation?

A: At present, there are more than 100 colleagues in the car networking department. Some of them are transferred from the mobile phone chip division and the smart home business sector. The total number of engineers in MediaTek's Taiwan is about 10,000, and we will increase the follow-up. This part of the input.

Q: In fact, Qualcomm and Intel have already entered the car networking market early. Do you think that your main advantage will be?

A: MediaTek has accumulated a lot of experience in mobile phones, TVs and smart homes. In addition, highly integrated, low-power SoC and 3G/4G communication technologies are also its advantages. Of course, the core point is MediaTek products often have obvious cost advantages, that is, the price will be cheap. (Editor's note: If the engraved experience in the mobile phone chip market, MediaTek is likely to be another promoter and winner of the popularity of the Internet of Vehicles market.)

Q: What do you think about the AI artificial intelligence and machine learning?

A: MediaTek internal assessment AI will usher in major development in the next few years. Apart from the AI technology, it will be loaded into various products such as mobile phones and TVs, as well as various types of living facilities. MediaTek currently has a full-time team to do this. Research, and will continue to increase capital investment.

Q: At present, there is a significant depreciation of the renminbi. Does MediaTek have any influence in this aspect when offering products to customers? For example, it will correspondingly increase the shipping price of a certain percentage, and what actions and actions will be taken in the future? ?

A: The quotes in the semiconductor industry are almost all in US dollars. The devaluation of the renminbi generally increases the cost of importing chips to customers. However, we ourselves are pricing the upstream purchases in dollars, so there is no room or means to use them. We should continue to purchase dollars and sell dollars. The issue of the exchange rate is a bit uncontrollable for us. At present, we can only adapt.

Q: Is there any focus on 5G at present? Will Huawei's confirmation of the 5G short code solution be helpful to you?

A: In fact, 5G has always been the focus of our attention. There are also internal teams that continue to follow. Regarding Huawei's 5GPolarCode (polarization code) as the ultimate solution for the 5G control channel eMBB scenario coding, MediaTek and Huawei promote the solution together. They have high-level agreements to promote this matter. Actually, our research in this area is much earlier. In some cases, the establishment of this standard is actually helpful for your own brand. Of course, in the end, you have to measure this problem of investment and return.
