UK launches new plan to commercialize solid-state LED light sources

On July 26, 2007, the UK Department of Business, Enterprise and Reform (DBERR) launched a program called NoveLELS to develop new GaN chip technologies and commercialize solid-state LED sources. The program received a grant of 3.3 million pounds from DBERR, while the UK Government and the Technology Strategy Board provided more than £1.7 million in funding. The NoveLELS program will be completed by a collaboration between the University of Bath and Brunel, IQE plc, Exxelis Limited, Mesophotonics Limited and Enfis Limited, and a vertically integrated alliance of three major aerospace companies, Airbus, AgustaWestland and GE Aviation. Four of these manufacturers will provide manufacturing experience, and the research teams at the two universities will host research on new LED chips and phosphor technology.

The program leader also hopes that the program will stimulate the commercialization of advanced GaN epitaxy, LED chip manufacturing, advanced phosphors and efficient thermal packaging.
