Infineon's new Gigabit PHY IC consumes 90% less power

Infineon Technologies today (6) announced the launch of the most energy-efficient Gigabit Ethernet physical layer (PHY) integrated circuit (IC) on the market. The new XWAYPHY11G is the first IC to comply with the EEEguid el ines specification and is the industry's smallest Gigabit home networking application IC.

The XWAY PHY11G is the first IC on the market to comply with the High-Efficiency Ethernet (EEE) specification, using the upcoming IEEE802.3az standard. When there is no data traffic in the Ethernet connection, Infineon's PHY goes into standby, reducing power consumption by up to 90% (only 50 mW, usually 500mW). Even when operating in full load mode, the Infineon solution consumes 25% less power than existing solutions and consumes less than 400mW of total power.

This new IP is suitable for all major broadband applications, including xDSL and PON routers in home gateway solutions, VoIP, computer motherboards, and Internet TV (IPTV), digital set-top boxes (IPSTB), gaming consoles and printers. And other consumer applications.

In addition to the new GigabitPHY family, the Infineon Cable Communications Division's broadband communications products include analog, digital and mixed-signal ICs, complemented by a full-featured software suite that allows system manufacturers to target broadband access. Design high-quality, high-transmission data and telecommunications system solutions to customer premises equipment (CPE).

Christian Wolff, vice president of the Infineon Cable Communications Division, said that the XWAYPHY11G's biggest feature is the support of the High-Efficiency Ethernet (EEE) specification, which can help customers achieve practical power-saving efficiency and make home network equipment customers get higher. Product value. At present, there are as many as 150 million sets of PHYs in the home network. If all of them are replaced by Infineon's solution, 500 million kilowatt-hours of electricity can be saved in one year, almost equal to a coal-fired power plant. 1 year of power generation.

The XWAY PHY11G and XWAY PHY22F will be sampling in the fourth quarter of 2009 and are expected to begin mass production in the first quarter of 2010.
