In the traditional LED TV classification method, the main basis is according to the distribution state of the LED backlight, which is divided into two types: side light type and direct type. The side-lit backlight mainly places the LED on the upper and lower sides or four right angles of the screen, and the emitted light needs to pass through the polarizing plate to transmit through the liquid crystal screen, but the side-lit LED TV can be made very thin, currently on the market. Most of the LED TVs also use this layout.

Because the light source is mainly concentrated on the upper and lower edges, the side light type LED is also prone to some problems in use. For example, in the center of the screen, it is easy to cause a bright concave area or a light leakage area, and the contrast of the central position is not high enough, and the picture is light and dark. The comparison is ambiguous; this external optical LED TV is also difficult to achieve accurate backlight control, and it is difficult to give the LED backlight a quick response and precise control.

The direct-lit LED backlight is placed evenly behind the panel. Compared with the edge-lit LED backlight, it can make the light source distribution more uniform, and can also achieve accurate local shading control, especially for improving the display quality of the screen. Contrast is quite useful. However, the direct-lit LED backlight has higher requirements on the processing power of the driving circuit of the TV set, and the cost is relatively high, and the volume is difficult to achieve thinning and lightness. Therefore, it is currently only used by a few high-end models with a focus on performance, and cannot be said to be Mainstream products in LED TVs.
