Startup Celeno CommunicaTIons is providing details of its first new 5GHz Wi-Fi chip, with the goal of supporting multiple high-definition video streams for carrier-level set-top boxes and gateways. The CL1300 can manage up to 4 simultaneous high-definition video streams at a distance of 50 meters. Although it passes through multiple walls and floors, it will not lose packets, the company claims.

Celeno's efforts are different from previous startups. They tried to design various versions of Wi-Fi for video-grade home networks, but failed. Celeno is not to create a non-standard quality of service technology that must be used at both ends of the link, but to design a compatibility compatible with 802.11 a / b / g / n chipset, and when used with any Wi-Fi chipset The described performance can be achieved when pairing.

The CL1300 uses a variety of technologies to support the best-effort features of Wi-Fi. The physical layer supports up to eight MIMO antennas that use triangles to locate and form a direct beam to other Wi-Fi devices.

The chip then uses a so-called switched MIMO algorithm to track the quality of the link, and switches the number of antennas needed according to the needs of sending and receiving work. It uses the only 20MHz channel on 5GHz to reduce the interference that may occur if it uses a 40MHz channel or the more crowded 2.4GHz band.

The embedded ARM9 processor is responsible for maintaining the throughput and ensuring that each client is based on its service level. The CPU accesses the link quality every 10 milliseconds, and schedules the transceiver functions as needed to maintain link quality.

Finally, the packet processor designed on the chip checks each packet to collect data about the quality of service. The resulting 130nm chip has a complete MAC and PHY, and can run at least 16MB of external DDR2 memory.

Celeno's test shows that CL1300 can maintain a throughput of 35 Mbits / s UDP at a distance of 32 meters, and can penetrate 5 walls before the throughput begins to decrease. In contrast, the competitor's 802.11n chipset deteriorated at 13 meters and after penetrating two walls. It was found in tests that it dropped at 21 meters and after penetrating four walls.
