IBM has developed a brain function chip

According to the report of the "Popular Science" website on August 18th, IBM has successfully developed two special computer chips that are similar to the human brain both structurally and functionally. The result marks that the computer is simulating people. The brain has taken another important step forward.

This chip is called "Neural Synapse Chip". It abandons the traditional concept of computer design. In the past, our computers used the "von Neumann architecture", which separated the memory from the processor and shared the input and output data. However, with the ever-increasing amount of data processing, this design has greatly affected the overall speed of the computer and created a bottleneck.

The "Neural Synapse Chip" designed by IBM combines data computing circuitry with data storage circuitry to enable the system to efficiently process a variety of information from a variety of sources. In an interview with the project leader Dehamonda-Maudha, he said: "This new design gives the computer processor a memory function... It's similar to the human brain in terms of efficacy, capabilities and storage space." The "Neural Synaptic Chip" is built on 45nm silicon and metal oxide semiconductors. Both contain 256 neurons.

"Neural synapse chips" can accomplish tasks that many traditional computers cannot accomplish. It has the ability to sense, learn, and remember and thus has a broad market prospect. In the future, humans can use this kind of chip to collect information on water temperature and wave height, and issue tsunami and hurricane warnings in a timely manner; or use smart chip technology to create special gloves to rapidly and accurately determine whether food has been processed through information such as smell, color, and texture. Deterioration.

But Modha believes that "Neural Synapse Chips" will not replace traditional electronic computers, and it will take a long time for the computer chips to really reach the complexity of the human brain. Currently, IBM is developing a smart chip system with 10 billion neurons and 100 trillion neuron synapses, once per hour of power consumption, and only a normal shoebox size.
