MAXIM Introduces 1.5A WLED Flash Driver IC

Maxim introduces the 1.5A white-light led (WLED) flash driver ICMAX8834 in a tiny 5mm2 chip scale package (WLP). The device integrates an I2C interface, a 5V PWMDC-DC boost converter, and two for film mode and flash illumination. A high current regulator and a low current regulator for driving the indicator LED. Two switching frequency options allow designers to optimize for high efficiency (2MHz option, up to 95% efficiency at full load) or minimum overall solution size (4MHz option, 16.5mm2pcb area). The MAX8834 offers a compact, flexible solution that supports a 5 megapixel camera module ideal for smartphones and other cellular phones that require 1.5A flash current.

The MAX8834's input voltage can be as low as 2.5V, enabling the next generation of deep discharge battery types. The 5VPWM boost converter integrates an internal switching MOSFET and a synchronous rectifier for high efficiency and minimal solution size. Two output voltage modes are available: fixed (3.7V to 5.2V) mode and adaptive mode. In fixed mode, the MAX8834 can be used to drive system loads other than flash LEDs. In adaptive mode, the boost converter only boosts the output voltage to the voltage required to drive the flash LED to provide optimum overall efficiency and lowest peak current drawn from the input supply | regulator. Each low dropout (maximum 110mV at 500mA), high current regulator with up to 750mA in flash mode and up to 125mA in film mode. The low current regulator provides up to 16 mA of current for driving the indicator LED, which also includes programmable fade-on, gradual shutdown, and blink timers. All of these features are easily controlled via the I?C interface.

The MAX8834 features a proprietary, patent-pending MAXFLASH function that allows the user to set a critical input supply voltage. When the MAXFLASH function is turned on, the MAX8834 adaptively reduces the flash current when the threshold voltage threshold is reached. This feature is extremely useful to avoid situations where the system is locked or turned off due to flash photography when the battery is approaching the system shutdown voltage. The GSM masking function adaptively reduces the input supply current to the level set by the user during PA transmission, keeping the flash current at maximum under all operating conditions. Other features include an optional remote temperature sensor interface, I?C programmable safety and watchdog timer, and automatic open/short LED detection. The fault monitor can be read via the I?C interface, facilitating automated factory testing.

The MAX8834 is available in a 2.5mm x 2.0mm x0.65mm, 20-bump WLP package and operates over the -40°C to +85°C extended temperature range. Samples and evaluation boards can be requested.
