The latest report from market research firm ICInsights shows that after experiencing a period of downturn, the compound annual growth rate of the global semiconductor industry from 2011 to 2016 will reach 8.0%, which is much higher than 3.9% from 2006 to 2011.
ICInsights expects that the NAND flash memory market will have the highest compound annual growth rate in this period, reaching 16.6%, slightly higher than the 16.0% from 2006 to 2011. The DRAM market is expected to achieve a healthy recovery with a compound annual growth rate of 9.6%, reversing the negative growth in the past five years. All other areas will also achieve single-digit growth.
Hot sales of tablets, smart phones and various portable wireless devices will drive the semiconductor market to maintain steady growth until the end of 2016, but ICInsights pointed out that the increase in unit price will be the main reason for the improvement of the market environment.
ICInsights said that due to the closure of many semiconductor companies, there are still some companies that have been merged and have enough capital to build new 300mm wafer fabs. This will also allow the overcapacity of the entire industry to ease, which will steadily increase the unit price before the end of 2016.
