German research team develops new LED arrays, saving street lamp maintenance costs

A simple estimate is that there are more than 300 million street lamps worldwide. Although they stand silently, they have been making progress, such as CityTouch connections, glare reduction, and even hanging in the air like FreeStreet. However, the life and maintenance of street lamps is also an important issue. In order to save financial expenses, do we have other ways to improve street lights?

The good news is that the research team at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany has developed a new type of LED array that promises significant savings in street lamp maintenance and usage costs.

It is based on a low-power LED array that is more energy efficient, safer, has lower heat generation, and makes the eyes more comfortable. But its biggest advantage is that even if a single LED is burned, it will not cause the entire circuit to be interrupted.

Usually, the LEDs of the LED street lamps are connected in series, which makes it easy for one module to be scrapped or repaired due to the failure of a small LED (a bad one directly destroys a string).

Taking 120V as an example, the number of bulbs connected in series can be around 40. To overcome the drawbacks of serialization, the KIT Optical Technology Institute has developed an "inter-connect" LED array.

As a result, even if a certain LED fails, it will not affect the other LED bulbs on the entire circuit to continue to emit light.

In the prototype, KIT researchers also increased the number of bulbs to 144 and the voltage to 20V to make it more efficient.

Finally, the low-power LED arrays have low operating costs, and even in high-volume installations, stupidity is comparable to current systems.
